Prize Pricks.

Crown-of-thorns starfish

Seriously exhausted my search, but just could not find any other descriptor for the crown-of-thorns starfish than prize pricks. Sorry, but that’s exactly what they are.

They invade en masse, galaxy like. Venomous needle-sharp bayonets at the ready keeping enemies at bay. Mouths at the open, probing for any piece of hard coral. Once detected, a stomach unfolds itself through the feeding organ and literally tummy-sucks every ounce of life from the coral leaving a dry and crusty patch in its wake.

Its only predators include giant triton and a few other molluscs. Sadly these are all in the process of being over-fished by even larger prize pricks in big trawlers with massive freezers.
